Penang State Museum & Art Gallery (1hr)

A Building Houses a Plethora of Penang History
Built in 1896, the entire west wing of this former building of Penang Free School was destroyed in WWII. On the first floor where the Art Gallery is located, works of local artists and paintings of old Penang are on display. From time to time, special exhibitions are held here.

A Homeland Away From Home

The first known burial at this cemetery took place in 1789. Captain Francis Light, the founder of British colony in Penang (died 1794) was buried here and so were several early governors of colonial Penang including RS Hutchings, the founder Penang Free School, the first English school in South East Asia.

Kuan Yin Teng (Goddess of Mercy Temple) (1hr)

One of the Oldest Chinese Temple in Penang
This popular temple is decicated to Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy. The first foundation was laid in 1728 by Chinese stettlers and completed in 1800, making it one of the oldest Chinese temple in Penang. The yellow stained wall, stone carving pillars and vintage floor are evidences of century’s devotion.

Delicious Traditional Foods in the Modern Establishment

New World Park Food Court is located next to Swatow Lane, where many good foods can be found. As most of the stalls moved into the new food court, one can now enjoy the excellent foods from the old stalls while take advantage at the same time of the comfort of the new establishment.

Make a Wish and Worship the God
Seng Hong Beow Temple along Jalan C.Y Choy is one of the local temples constructed by the early Chinese settlers. The temple dedicated to the God local worshippers called Seng Hong, and is frequented by many making wishes for their well-being. It is especially busy during festive seasons, Chinese New Year in particular.

Famous Haunted House Full of Sad and Scary Stories
Relau Villa is a dilapidated mansion and full of scary stories at Penang. Its first owner was a Chinese Capitan Chung Thye Phin, a wealthy tin miner. This beautiful villa was built in the early 1930 with an unique Italian architectural style and has the first fresh water swimming pool of Penang.

KK Bak Kut Teh sells only Bak Kut Teh. They serve both the soup and dry versions. The soup version comes in a clearer soup which is made with amount of herbs. The dry version is probably the highlight here, cooking in a thick black sauce with lots of chili and okra.

Kafe Doby Ghaut features an authentic Penang curry mee stall. The curry mee is served in a white broth due to the coconut milk. Before adding chili paste, it is not spicy at all. Besides the regular ingredients of curry mee, one can also add items like fish balls and fried chicken wings.

Learn About the Wartime History of Penang

Penang War Museum sits atop Batu Maung Hill which is located at the southeast of Penang. It was originally built and used as British military defense fortress to protect the island from enemies before World War II in 1930s. It has been reopened to the public in 2002.
