One of the Grand Architectural Masterpieces in Ipoh

Before it was turned into a railway station, Ipoh Railway Station was initially used as hospital in 19th century. It was also used as a filming site for Hollywood movie "Anna and the King" and is a popular pre-wedding photography venue in Ipoh.

Designed by Arthur Benison Hubback, the railway station was constructed in 1917 and opened in 1935. This grand architectural masterpiece also houses the Majestic Hotel, better known as "Taj Mahal of Ipoh". This ivory tower is built with Moorish domes and turrets, making it one of main attractions in Ipoh.

The Key Heritage Site of Ipoh City

Back in 1960s, a worker of Town Hall stumbled upon an underground tunnel linking the building to the now-retired Ipoh High Court. It is believed that the tunnel was used to transfer prisoners to High Court.

This white neo-classical building is a beautiful landmark and is one of the must-see heritage buildings in Ipoh. The City Hall, formerly known as "Town Hall", oozes a great colonial charm with its intricate design and architecture. Being a reminiscence of old world Europe, this building makes an interesting photography backdrop.

The clock tower was built to commemorate J.W.W. Birch, the first British resident in Perak. Standing mightily opposite Ipoh State Mosque, this square tower consists of a portrait bust and four panels which depict the advancement of civilization. This clock tower was unveiled in 1909.

Before opium was banned, it was said that when an opium addict suddenly dropped dead, his body will be thrown into streets for municipal workers to cart off the next day. Luckily, strict anti-vice laws were introduced and the street was cleaned up soon after in Panglima Lane.

Panglima Lane, which in local Cantonese dialect means "second concubine lane", was one of the red-light districts of Ipoh before Japanese Occupation - filled with brothels, opium dents and gambling houses. Today, it is one of the most scenic streets in old town Ipoh where is perfect for leisurely strolls.
